Firestorm Planetfall - Scenery Box One Thoughts

Hi folks!

I just finished putting together Scenery Box One from Spartan, for Firestorm Planetfall, and wanted to post some (brief) thoughts on the set.

A few notes:

- I have yet to play a game. I rarely get to play anything TBH (so I don't know why I'm obsessed with terrain and scenery). I'm still working on my Aquan/Terquai force as well.
- These seem like a really great match for Dropzone Commander terrain. In the photos I'm using the street map and buildings from DZC's starter set.  I think of this as a forward command post or military installation on the edge of a city. Or something like that :D

Overall, I was really impressed with Scenery Box One. You get a lot of buildings in it, and they are fairly easy to assemble. Once build and painted (if you want. I consider that optional) they look really nice next to the Planetfall minis. They seem sturdy and highly functional, while still looking great. What I like about this set is it's a fast, economical and substantial way to populate your game table with (10mm) terrain.

I recommend superglue for these (That's what I used) - basically I glued the frames and then glued the card panels into place in slots etc.

Paint wise, I found Tamiya Field Grey to be a terrific matching color to paint the (transparent out of the box) plastic frames.  Basically I spray primed them, sprayed them Field Grey and called it a day. I sprayed them on the "sprue" and didn't worry much about cleaning them up etc. Quick and functional while still looking great imo.

Things I maybe would have done differently:

- I'm less fond of the inclusion of the resin objective markers in the box. It seems like you would not need two sets of these, so if you want to buy another Scenery Box to add more buildings you are getting a bunch of resin pieces you probably don't need more of. And the thing is, that adds I'm sure a fair bit of cost to the box. If they had packaged those separately, the Scenery Box could have been priced more affordably than it already is (I'm guessing).

- There should be some instructions in there, or online (apologies if they are and I missed them). Eventually you can figure it out from looking at the images on the box and the manual, but it really wouldn't hurt to give some basic info on how these go together.

- Possibly the two sides of the card could have been a little more different in appearance, but this is a minor quibble.

With the caveats above, I'd rate the set a solid A-! Highly recommended (and I bet it would look great for DZC too!).

More Planetfall Aquan Work

Finished some more Aquan tanks. Made some tweaks to the color scheme (mainly changing the yellow parts to a green color).

Firestorm Planetfall Aquan Color Scheme

Ok, turns out I wasn't really feeling the Directorate tank I posted previously and now it's in a stripping bath.

I switched over to try out an Aquan tank. This uses a sort of dark candy blue finish for most of the body. It's hard to tell in the photos (I think) but it's quite shiny and metallic in nature. I think it looks killer in person although I'm not sure the photos are doing it justice. I think I like this enough to paint more of them in this scheme.

Base isn't finished, I intend to add fine, relatively "bright" green flock to represent foliage at the right scale. I think that will really set it off nicely.

Firestorm Planetfall - Directorate WIP Part 2

Bit more work on this tank to test out my Planetfall color-scheme. I'm not 100% sure about the orange accents and I think my yellow headlights are ....too yellow? Something feels off about this. I also added bright silver panels to try and add contrast and interest, as well as adding dirt to the tracks and changing the color of the ground texture. Maybe the tank has too many colors on it?

Firestorm Planetfall - Directorate WIP

Started to paint up the Directorate side of the starter set.

I'm trying to strike a balance between "fast to paint" and nice looking. I'm actually pretty pleased with this grey with sharp highlights, but it will get boring to look at pretty fast. Thoughts on how I could add some color (and what color)?

Painted Maggoth Lord

Don't think I ever posted final shots of this guy. Very pleased with how he turned out. Still seem to have trouble taking photos lately. I haven't added the grass tufts to the base so it looks pretty plain right now.

Infinity Operation: Icestorm Nomads + a Gecko

I just finished up a Gecko to add to my Operation Icestorm Nomads. I guess I kinda have a nearly playable force (I'm not sure what to add next to hit ~ 300...kinda stuck). I also added some decals to snazz up the grey bases a bit. I'm really happy with how they turned out. Also took a better quality photo this time.

Maggoth Lord WIP shot

Another fun kit to paint, still lots to do on the creature - and the rider needs to be started. The horn transitions need to be smoothed out too. Teeth not done...lots of details to finish, but I'm digging him so far!

Blightkings Finished

Hi folks, finished this unit up finally - lots of little details to attend to but ultimately I'm really happy how they turned out. Granted, they look a little more like zombies/dead guys than just sickly ones but I do kinda dig the white, pallid flesh I used. I might do 5 more and then mix them up a bit so some are this color and some are a bit "healthier" tone but still very gross :)

I have the new Maggoth that came out today - he's assembled and waiting for basing/primer. Looking forward to painting him up.

Blightkings WIP 3

Just posting another quick photo update. Getting there, getting there :)

More Blightkings WIP

More progress this evening. Still a fair bit left to do.  I'm posting a relatively raw shot from my iPhone (except I cropped it).

Nurgle Blightkings WIP

Hi folks, sorry for the long silence. Work is kicking my butt lately (family life is pretty crazy too with 3 little ones!). I'm actually painting more than my updates would suggest. The problem is my small amount of free time goes to the actual painting and then I don't take time to post photos or blog updates :)

Among other projects on my painting table right now are the new Nurgle Blightkings. I've always had a fondness for nurgle. This is a great kit - lots of nice details and variety, and they are really enjoyable to paint so far!  This is just a WIP shot obviously, plenty of work left to do on them.

Update: the image I had cropped/brightened a bit turned these guys too blue/purple for some reason, so here's the raw image.  I intend to highlight the flesh to be a little more white and also to of course add yellow/brown/green/icky to them.

Space Wolves WIP Shots

Hey folks, sorry it has been such a long time since last post! I'm starting to think I should start a facebook group instead (I have no idea how much traffic/interest I'm still getting on this blog, given how infrequently I update it :|).

I've been posting less because I was in one of my once-in-a-while painting breaks, playing a lot of video games in my spare time instead of painting, and traveling/working a lot.

In any case, the new Space Wolves stuff has my attention (I'm one of the few people who seem to like that new flier model for example), and since I already had some assembled and lying around I figured I'd actually put some paint on them!

I have a unit of Long Fangs and a unit of Wolf Guard Terminators "mostly done" and some Grey Hunters that are coming along nicely.  Note that I play to get a few units almost done, then do all the final decals, base and details in a batch.

New Wood Elves Treeman - Completed

Finished this guy up after about a week of work. Really fun kit to build and paint. I think I might try doing a Treeman Ancient now. This guy is likely Ebay bound at some point but for now will look nice in my display case :)

Convergence of Cyriss Army

Thought I'd share a (not lit properly smartphone) photo of my slowly growing Convergence of Cyriss force. This is a weird army for me in the sense that (a) I haven't abandoned it like I have so many other armies I start, (b) I haven't got a burning desire to take it into any games (yet), and (c) I just add to it slowly but surely, no rush. Just whenever I feel like it. Probably because - let's face it - "mostly metal" is an easy color to paint :)

I have a prime axiom, corollary and assimilator all in progress as well (lots left to do on those).

Imperial Knight - House Hawkshroud - Finished

Finally finished this guy - in the end, I'm super happy with how he turned out. Adding just a bit of weathering in the form of chips and scorching etc gives it some personality :)

The House Terryn knight didn't sell for quite as much as I was hoping (I have a few ideas as to why) so I'm hoping this guy does a bit better for me on ebay. He's for sale here.

Hope you like this one!

Next up is either Obsidian Knight or Taranis I think.

Here's a bunch of photos!

Imperial Knight - Hawkshroud - almost done....

Almost done - pretty happy with how he's turning out. Still have work to do of course - matte varnishing, some of the silver trim (it's actually Vallejo Liquid "White Gold" but didnt go on as smooth as I'd like because it's a bit old). Base needs to be finished, and a few other transfers/details. I will also probably lightly weather this one (not much, just a bit). I'm about to buy another kit, still enjoying these! Thinking maybe Obsidian Knight next (although he'll be kinda easy to do).

Oh and I had to kinda invent that transfer design on the white shoulder because the standard transfer sheet only has "half" of Hawkshroud stuff. Doesn't have the nice laurel design in the official shots.

Imperial Knight WIP - House Hawkshroud

WIP shot of my next Imperial Knight - this time House Hawkshroud. He is currently a bit glossy in preparation for some wash and decal work.

Imperial Knight on Ebay

Hi everyone - thought I should probably mention (on my own blog) the Imperial Knight is now on ebay with a few days to go. You can find the auction here.

Imperial Knight of House Terryn - Finished Pics

Few more pictures - this is the final Imperial Knight, without his helmet/mask which I'm still working on - as a focal point I want to make sure it's clean and crisply painted. I recently moved my photo setup and wanted to try something new (the mirror on the bottom) although I clearly need a larger white backdrop and the mirror is "double reflecting" :\   Hard to fit this whole guy into the frame too.

Imperial Knight WIP Update 3 - almost done....

Man - these models are beasts to paint and finish up. I think it's one of those models you can either paint super fast or take forever...and both approaches can look great lol :)  I've seen some folks online crank out 2 or 3 of these quite fast. I'm jealous.

For me, it has been somewhat painstaking getting all the clean edges on the transfers and dual colored areas, things like that. Also the Vallejo liquid gold is giving me trouble - it goes on so nice, but I find it harder to use on detailed areas due to my brush getting "clumpy" pretty fast (even with alchohol to thin it etc).

Also, to finish the transfers I'm using Alclad 2 flat coat - it is SUPER flat...but almost to the point where in places it nearly looks dusty, in a way. Hard to explain.

I've also managed to F up his helmet a fair bit - just can't quite "nail it" with 4 neatly edged helmet panels. I'll try to fix this one up or maybe switch to the other medieval looking one. The other one is arguably cooler anyways.

Most of the model is glued now except the torso and leg sections are separate (ie a top half and a bottom half).
