WarmaHordes? HoMachine? Khador!

Posted February 20, 2012

Here's something that hasn't been seen on my blog in ages - Warmachine! For the longest time I've been "lapsed" from the Privateer Games. I think I fell out of it when MKII rules were being tested. Something about the change-over was too much for my little brain, and I just kinda stopped being interested.

Fast forward to early this month (or was it late last month) when Privateer announced War Room. I'm super impressed by that program - enough so that I actually find myself interested in playing the games again! To that end, I've gone a little crazy (making up for lost time I guess). Bought a two player battle box, Wrath, FoH: Trollbloods, FoH: Circle, Wrath...Primal MKII...and piles of figures.

Yesterday I managed to make it to St. Albert to visit Thunderground Comics and Collectibles. What a great store and the owner (Roy Kim) seems like a super nice guy. They were actually having a tournament (league day?) and tons of people were out to play. He also had an *awesome* selection of WM/HDs models (though granted he'd just received a re-stock). Walked out with a ton of stuff (paid for it too!). Meanwhile, at work the one game that seems to have very consistent legs is WarmaHordes.…

Dem bones!

Posted February 11, 2012

Ok - 60 skeletons (ok 59...room for a hero) done. Finally. This took a long time because halfway through I had to travel to San Fran for a week. I captured most of the steps for these on video and will do a "speed painting skeletons" tutorial soon(ish). The photos make them look a wee bit too colorful. I added a fair bit of rust and "greenish tarnish" to these because I wanted to give them a bit of visual interest. But it comes off a little strong in the photos. With a unit this large (get your mind out of that gutter) I think it's almost a must to magnetize and transport them on a tray rather than rank them up at game time. Maybe I'll show how I do that, at some point.

Also I notice the little decal on the banner is slivered (silvered?) a bit so I'll probably touch that up.

Privateer's War Room

Posted February 6, 2012

Last week's announcement of "Colossals" by Privateer Press naturally garnered a tremendous amount of buzz and interest. It features huge, kickass looking new models for each Warmachine faction (can't recall if Hordes was included in this). As a somewhat lapsed player of their systems (ok very lapsed, havent played a game in a couple of years). I was moderately interested, more from a painting perspective.  Basically I've drifted much more heavily into Warhammer/40k because of plastics basically. I don't really enjoy metal models anymore.

That said, I think maybe Privateer should have split off their OTHER announcement and given it room to have it's own spotlight with the gaming community, because I personally feel War Room is MUCH bigger news!

This upcoming app is amazing. It's a game changer imo. Basically you carry around your iOS or Android device, and you can

- build armies with all the latest updates and with access to beautiful full color card images

- track damage, status effects, and click on abilities to see the latest rules (including errata)

- connect to other War Room users to have a game, allowing you to view the opponents army and …

Mantic Zombies - a little disappointed...

Posted January 26, 2012

Hi everyone! So obviously right now I'm doing a lot of work on Vampire Counts, and in particular lately I like to try and get core units done first with the characters/monsters etc as "carrots" to keep me painting (ie after finishing core I can paint something a little more fun). Zombies are apparently a fair bit better than they were under the last book, but I really don't like the old GW Zombie sculpts. So I turned to Mantic. I read a bunch of reviews about their Zombies, and they seemed like nicely detailed and very affordable alternatives. Most reviews were very positive.

I managed to buy a box of 30 from Sentry Box in Calgary. Upon opening them and starting to assemble, the glow started to diminish pretty rapidly....

On the positive side: the models do have nice details, and are a nice scale and just overall more visually appealing than the outdated GW ones. They are also very affordable given you need hordes of Zombies.  I dont know why I keep capitalizing "Zombie" but go with it ;)

On the negative side:

- You only basically get three variants. Each sprue is basically half a GW unit sprue in size, and contains 3 zombies worth of legs and torsos. You can mix them up to get so…

Painted Vampire Counts Crypt Horrors

Posted January 22, 2012

Finished painting up a few of the new Crypt Horror models last night - a quick and dirty job, no pun intended. I have a (somewhat shorter than the last one) video tutorial linked at the bottom of this post. Larger pics in the gallery as usual. They have a bit of glare, which seems to be plaguing my recent photos.

Vargheists Painting Tutorial Video Posted

Posted January 21, 2012

Hey folks, my latest painting tutorial video is up - finally - for some reason the upload kept failing over the past couple of days (it was a 4 hour upload). I think the quality of this one is somewhat improved over the previous ones, and hopefully they will keep getting better (assuming I am able to make more...).

Enjoy!

Vampire Counts Vargheists Painted

Posted January 17, 2012

Finished up the first set of new Vampire Counts models - a unit of 3 Vargheists (I may do more - but for the next box I think I want to paint Crypt Horrors!). These were fun and relatively painless to paint - I wanted to try a darker color scheme than the official pale skinned ones. I also took a lot of footage of the painting to make a tutorial video, but that will take a couple of days to edit. Larger photos in the gallery.

Necron Annihilation Barge Posted

Posted January 14, 2012

Finally getting around to posting images of the Annihilation Barge that was the subject of my recent tutorial videos! Also bought some of the new Vampire Counts stuff today - some really, really nice models. Picked up a wight king (I really like the new "single plastic" models, much more than finecast ones frankly!), a Mortis Engine, and 2 boxes of the Vargheist/Crypt Horrors.  First things I paint will likely be the wight king and 3 vargheists. I'm going to paint the VGs in dark tones, kinda like the Terrorgheist I did a while back. I think it might look cooler than the really pale official scheme.

Naturally with the release of a new army (I picked up the book and a couple of packs of magic cards) I get fantasies of trying to paint up an army. Rarely pans out as you know :)  I never did get very far with the Ogre Kingdoms for example, despite some really nice models and a decent power level for the army from what I've read. The one thing I used to hate about playing VCs (....I think I played them once...) was when the general dies your army crumbles. They've changed that slightly now (other wizards can slow down the crumbling). I'd love a little VC army although painting up enou…

Necron Painting - Tutorial Video Posted

Posted January 8, 2012

I managed to complete a full tutorial video (finally!) and have posted it to YouTube - check it out! It's about how I'm painting these bone colored Necrons right now. It's actually a two part video, part 2 is still uploading and looks like it could take a few hours. If you enjoy the video I hope you will rate/subscribe/comment/share it :D

UPDATE: Part 2 is now live, and I have a product review following later tonight as well (video).
